Ketchup that we use today was from the idea of using tomatoes as medicine in the 1830’s. Before this tomatoes had a pretty bad rap. It was sold as a pill called American Hygiene Pill or Extract of Tomato Pill. Archibald Miles claimed that it would heal jaundice, bilious disease, cough, and headaches. Now it didn’t actually work that way but made a frenzy people were buying the pills and copycats tried to makes some money too.
Ketchup used to be made from mushrooms or a concoction of fish. This was a spicy additive that spread all across Europe.
