Melatonin is a hormone the body produces when it prepares itself for sleep. Its a neurohormone produced by the pineal glands in the brain. It’s also used as a sleep aid when necessary and the over the counter supplement helps you fall asleep, improves sleep quality, and the duration of sleep.

In the U.S. melatonin can be bought over the counter. In Australia and most European countries it is a prescription medication for adults. Though there is a need for more long term studies of taking melatonin, there are currently no known risks to taking the supplement. Since, melatonin is a sleep aid and drowsiness may occur it should be taken when going to bed. It is not recommended to be taken during the day.

Melatonin can also thin the blood and should not be taken with blood thinners. It should only be used for short term sleep help.
